Windows default "notepad.exe" is not, never ever use windows notepad.exe. Never use windows wordpad.exe to edit text files.

In PMC editing community when most of the tutorials say use proper text editor it means exactly that, a proper text editor instead of the garbage that comes with default windows install. Notepad++ is a proper text editor.

Notepad++ is free and open source text editor, it gets frequent updates. Has all the basic stuff like dark mode, syntax highlighting for various programming languages and scripting languages, C++, HTML, PHP, etc.

In Notepad++ version 8.6.3, a regression was identified and subsequently fixed. When two documents are displayed side by side, clicking into the unfocused content no longer activates it as the current document. This regression has been resolved in version 8.6.4. To address a performance issue of “Replace All” in previous version 8.6.4, Notepad++ no longer triggers SCN_MODIFIED and other Scintilla notifications during the “Replace All” action. Consequently, some plugins that rely on Scintilla’s notifications may malfunction after a “Replace All” operation. To rectify this regression, a new notification called NPPN_GLOBALMODIFIED has been implemented in Notepad++ v8.6.5. Plugin developers should monitor NPPN_GLOBALMODIFIED alongside SCN_MODIFIED, if SCN_MODIFIED is already monitored in the plugin. The session loss problem and the data loss due to the power outages issue are also addressed in this release.

In this version, we have addressed the regression issue where multi-edit cursors were incorrectly placed.
Additionally, we’ve resolved the problem of multi-editing not displaying multiple cursors in dark mode.
The support for Go and Raku has been enhanced, with the addition of auto-completion for both languages and a function list specifically for Raku.

Alongside these fixes, you’ll find various enhancements and bug fixes.

Version 8.7 may seem like a major update due to its version number, but it isn’t. While it doesn’t introduce any major new features, it includes numerous bug fixes and improvements.

Notepad++ v8.7.1 has been released.

Notepad++ updater WinGUp is updated in this release to include cURL v8.10.1, which fixes the security issue CVE-2024-7264.
The hanging issue with opening network files in Notepad++ due to network disconnection is largely improved in this version.

2 minor regressions (one for opening a folder via command line and another related to find dialog statusbar messaging) have also been addressed in this release.

This update includes numerous bug fixes and new enhancements.

"Pin Tab", one of the most requested features, has been introduced in this release. It's enabled by default, but you can easily disable it via Preference dialog. The look & feel of tab bar have also been improved by hiding the close & pin icons in the inactive tabs.

This update includes numerous bug fixes and other enhancements.

One critical (crash) bug and one regression from v8.7.2 have been fixed in this release. Two commands related to the Pin Tab feature and two bug fixes are included in this version.
