So, how is it?
Heya, Widowmaker!
Is this project still alive? Im really interested on it, cause I guess it will be a hires terrain and the CA will have less objecs. Why the interest? It will be better for online gameplay, cause the load will come from eye candy, which our video cards will hopefully suport. And as many people here still play on modem 56k, I guess it will be a lot more stable.
Well, eager for news buddy, your work is impressive. See ya

Re: So, how is it?
yup project is alive.
just moving on slowely on my own pace
Campaign is running now and learned alot last 2 weeks about it, since Iceland is a small region making more campaigns is fairly easy.
as for release plans, I don't have any
I want at least one regiontileset ready for a beta release (currently using Korea tileset) and if all goes well I might even hold off a release till V1.0 is ready.
we will see all in all anywhere between 3 months and a year.
somewere in between I will need a QAP(fixing CATE limitations) team. Those people will recieve an installer sooner but I have to complete the tilesets and the CATE scripts first.
some screenies up here http://members.chello.nl/m.i.schaeperclaus/widmak.htm
hope to have time to fix these pages soon and keep em updated once in a while

Yo dude, looks good
BTW, have you ever thought of changing tiles in a easy way? I mean, make then "greener", lighter, darker, dont know. Just to be a little different from korea? Specially the ocean tiles, I think they´re too dark.
Maybe its worth.

yup well they already got 'terraintexturepatch' applied
right now it is just setting up ther bin and Cate scripts
after that it is replacing tiles.
The sea is so dark becuase I used the laketile in these images instead of the sea tile wich is alot darker.

Re: So, how is it?
One thing I was thinking of, but this is prolly better for ODS:
- If you populate the ground with small objects, like plants, cactus(for ODS), rocks and make them appear only when very close(I mean, real close), would it make a big FPS hit?
I guess that could count a lot in the sense of low flight speed.

Re: So, how is it?
this would mean alot of objectives in the campaignfiles to be added I think thsi would cost quite some fps.

Re: So, how is it?
You can gain a lot by using higher resolution tiles with a grainy base texture. The higher resolution makes the grain details sharper and adds really to the sense of speed without hitting the fps too much.quote:Originally posted by Seifer:

Heya,
I was playing on the dogfight terrain and 2 things came into my mind. First: its awesome, after playing there i dont wanna play other theaters anymore.
Second: ground objects in falcon are too big.
Third: will Iceland use the same mesh size?

Second: hmm there are no groundobjects in DGFT, so how those came to your mind I dunno
Third: the Meshsize/resolution will be the same, however Iceland is a bigger Island then the very small map of DGFT. also Iceland will be alot smoother meshwise since DGFT is a compressed Korea map and Iceland will not be such a map but have 'real' dimesions.

Re: So, how is it?
Lets make it clearer: when you fly over a city in the dogfight terrain, you can clearly see what would be the size of a building. In korea, for example, a single building would occuppy more than a whole block in the dogfight terrain. Thats the reason i said that.

yup indeed.. the tiles for Korea were made for 1000 meter resolution.
an Iceland tileset would be made for a 250 meter resolution and all would be fine again.
this is one of the reasons I left all the objects out of DGFT.

Re: So, how is it?
If I might bust into the conversation here, I'd like to comment on Icelandic objects.
Compared to other spots of land its size, Iceland doesn't have a lot of "objects", be they buildings or trees or telephone poles.
Remember, Iceland's 280,000 people (approximately the population of Newark, NJ) are spread across a land the size of South Carolina. Outside of Reykjavik, the most you'll see from the air is the occasional idylic coastal fishing village.
Regarding trees: over the past several hundred years, Icelanders have cut down almost all of the nation's trees. Trees currently inhabit about 1% of Iceland's landmass. Massive replanting efforts have been only somewhat successful because most trees get confused by the island's unpredictable cold snaps. Those trees that do exist are nothing to write home about. See some examples of Iceland's trees here: http://kaldadarnes.fsu.is/vefir/liffrae ... trees.html
What it DOES have, though, is some really astounding scenery. Volcanos, glaciers, fields of black ash sand, bare rock, lakes, rivers, and small green pastures. I found a very nice photo of Egilsstaðir airport on the Icelandic Civil Aviation Administration's web site that serves as a good example: http://webserver.caa.is/caa/8000/8100/m ... ordurs.jpg
Notice the relative absence of trees? And the multi-colored roofs in the town in the lower-right-hand corner? That's not just posing for a picture; there are villages like that all along the coast.
The CAA web site also has a few photos of some smaller coastal airstrips that are simply breathtaking. Check them out here: http://webserver.caa.is/caa/9000/9000_pictures.asp
Oh, and one more thing. Reykjavik does have one very distinctive and very large "object": the Hallgrimskirkja. This is the largest church in Iceland, and is situated on a hill overlooking the city. Close-up photo here: http://www.pbase.com/image/2109424/original
and other shots here: http://www.myk.mcmail.com/reykjavik/cit ... imskirkja/
Now Widowmaker, I don't know you. But I can see by choice of Iceland that you view a theater as more than just a place for planes to shoot each other out of the sky.
So I would like to personally thank you for embarking on this project, and wish you many, many hours of free time in the future which you can devote to the PMC posse.
If this project comes to completion and is done with enough attention to detail, virtual pilots will forget all about their objectives and get lost in the scenery.
If you get Iceland right, you will make this (mostly) grown man weep.
Get it wrong, and I'll still cry, albeit for a different reason.

We are on a tight schedule here
as for the tools I have 1 or 2 things in mind
something that creates the paletta wich is stored in the theater.map .
this paletta holds the possible RGBvalues related to the x1 in the terrain (yeah yeah I know here he comes with the X-stuff again )
basically idea for the proggy is alot about avareging.
let me know if you are interested.
