Post by vega_uk » 2004-09-28 03:11:13

hi

ive made a largeish island 512x512 and ive used the basic textures from Nogova ot1 ob1.paa etc etc ....no problems with transitions or nothing, except when i test the island in the game its very blocky i take off in a chopper and u can see the blocks (cells) basically from 150 foot up no matter what texture it is ...any ideas on this plz and how i can combat this problem

Are you saying that your terraingrid display setting in-game is too low? Try raising it to "normal" from "very_low" in the video options in-game.

I see. Well, the BIS textures are not exactly "non-repeating", as you have discovered. The only way to get around this is to either create textures that blen so well and in a fashion to fool the human mind into not seeing patterns, or add objects so you don't pay as close attention to the landtext.

By using large flat ares like in your screen shots, you increase the number of cells visible, and the likelyhood of your mind seeing texture repeating. If on the other hand you use rolling and hilly terrain like the BIS maps, there's less cells (and thus textures) to be seen.

To overcome the problem with the visibility of repetitive textures on large flat terrains like Afghanistan, a common method is, to generate first a texture, which extends over several cells and then to cut it into cell fragments (e.g. for an area of 8*8 cells).
This reduces the visible texture repetition rate a lot. Also the transitions are brought more far away from the viewer. Therefore only blends along the original picture frame are needed. The texture number limit isn't burdened very much in respect, that one fills large areas at all.

A splendid tool to do this is Bryce, which delivers perfect super high resolution OFP style textures and has an endless number of tools and features, especially made for terrain texture editing.
