Optimizing the models, thats the way to go.

I actually had this planned on later day, but right now its been on the "news" so much and when I went and browsed around our models, it came apparent to me that they are in a mess.

What I'm talking about is the number of textures and sections. Read more details in PMC Editing Wiki: Fixing sections tutorial.

Yesterday I was busy working on the weapon models. I figured that what do we see or use the most ingame, well thats weapons. I think the three most common things are units, weapons and objects (vegetation). Vehicles are important too but they come after these three areas.

So I finally got around and added the updated Skaven weapons, which now come in with normal/specular maps. Then I went through each and every weapon and checked them for anything obvious and the number of sections (I did not do any texture merging at this point).

When you look at the models like vte_type68 and vte_pps43, you just must shiver about the amount of sections what was removed. I have no idea what kind of framerate change this optimization causes (if any? I just dont know) but I'd take a wild guess that its going to be all good baby when all the models have been optimized.

for some stuff,esp the vehicles the only way to get the sections down now is to merge the textures.

After the m48 i will merge the t55.

Now I have done tons of work for optimization. I have completely went through of the VTE_objects (vegetation, buildings etc objects), they are all optimized and some even had some lower resolution LOD work done in them (just a few though). I merged textures for couple of the jungle canopies, they look different but not what I expected. Altough the performance boost is there.

Then I optimized the same way the VTE_air, for example the most used vehicle in VTE during its history, the almighty UH-1 Huey slick, it had freaking 227 sections and now it came down to double digits (which still is a lot, but heck alot less than two hundred).

Again I must say that I cant say what the FPS effect is if there even is one (we still are running OFP quality stuff here), but at least we are in the right path, we dont have unoptimized models out (well as far as without merging textures goes).

So all is good.

All 464 models have now been texture merged (naturally including creating normal/specular maps) and optimized. Oh shit what a task that was... I'm bleeding textures from my eyes and ears, argh. Whoa now its over (regarding vte_objects), I feel exhausted, happy but exhausted :)

Or step back considering how much more lower resolution the models look because 1 big merged texture instead seventeenthousand laggy small "high res" (in comparison) textures. I am truly scared that people just barf on the new look and dont realize that texture merging is a must for performance. Yes I fully understand that perhaps we should not build a addon/mod if we dont have person to complete task XYZ, but what can I say, I cant texture/uvmap right now so there is nothing I can do for the look because we dont have texture artist nor uv-mapper on the team.

Anyways, I've also been thinking about changing the next release method not to be so public... but thats for another post & topic ;)

We still have open calling for modeler and texturer, so far we've had little luck. I'm well beyond being sad about such things, heck, I started VTE because SEB's Nam Pack Air Module (NPAM) was basically stalled/cancelled, I thought to myself that if nobody else does it, I'll do it.

But yeah, if you could ask around for help it would be much appreciated.
