Other Vietnam games

Post by Snake Man » 2007-10-23 01:53:13

What Vietnam games has there been released into PC so far, this is a list I quickly gathered from google and few other places. Please contribute by giving your opinions of these titles or list some games that I've missed.

If you see comments for some of these games without quotes, it means they are from directly from me, as you can guess from the writing anyways hehe.

SEAL Team
Image
Released June 1993 :)
homepage n/a
SEAL Team (c) Electronic Arts 1993 is a fucking legend.

This is the game that got us started on the NAM stuff, I still remember the intense feeling of crawling around the meekong delta and avoiding VC patrols, feeling awesome NAM feeling by the environmental sounds and large game area (at the time), the weapons and the overall mood. This game also really involved vehicles like Huey and boat insertions. PMC member Mozart always bragged how he completed the mission(s) by just using a knife.

What can I really say, SEAL Team is truely a legend, of course nowadays you cant even run it on 2007 PCs, but still how can we start list of NAM games without mentioning this legend, it was the good old times :)

"Vietnam War tactical combat simulation, featuring multiple camera perspectives and squad-based simulation gameplay. You assemble a four-man SEAL team and dispatch it for missions in the Mae Khong Delta, Vietnam. There are a variety of missions to fulfill, such as recon, demolition, espionage, rescue, and straightforward assault. Features authentic weapons, situations, medals, uniforms, and even hand signals. The missions themselves are realistc as well and take a long time to plan out and complete. In order to maintain a well-balanced team, it's also important that each of the commandos gets exposed to combat. Characters all come with their own unique set of stats and will level-up RPG style as they progress through the campaign." -pc.ign.com

"Men of Valor is a first-person shooter set in the Vietnam War. And it's good!" -gamespot.com

"From the creators of the award-winning Medal of Honor: Allied Assault comes Men of Valor: Vietnam, 2015's historical first-person shooter that portrays infantry combat during the Vietnam War. Combining the latest Unreal technology with the gameplay expertise of 2015, Men of Valor immerses you in the humid jungles of Southeast Asia in the most controversial conflict of the modern era. Battlefield Vietnam
Image
Released Mar 2005
homepage n/a
"Battlefield Vietnam packs more dramatic moments in its gameplay than most any multiplayer-focused action game in the past few years." -gamespot.com

"After a series of highly popular expansion packs Battlefield Vietnam represents the first proper sequel to the blockbusting Battlefield 1942. The set-up is pretty much the same as before in that you're cast as a basic infantryman, using standard first-person shoot-'em-up controls, but have the chance to commandeer and pilot any vehicle in the game. Since this new game is set in the Vietnam War that means 24 authentic-looking vehicles, including helicopters, jet fighters, patrol boats and tanks. Battlefield Vietnam is largely an online game. There is a single-player mode but the computer AI is so appalling it's really not worth bothering with, except as a means to learn the controls of the various vehicles. When played online things really come alive as you cooperate as a part of a team to storm the enemy control points. Although the graphics are little changed from its predecessor there are significant differences in the way the basic gameplay works in Battlefield Vietnam. This is most obvious in the differences between the two sides with the Viet Cong having access to a range of special weapons such as pungi sticks and other booby traps, compared to the hi-tech American jets and helicopters. It's a pity the graphics and control interface weren't improved more but despite it sometimes still feeling like a mission disk rather than a true sequel, Battlefield Vietnam is certainly one of the best online games currently available." -David Jenkins

Hell in Vietnam
Image
homepage
Released Apr 2007
I think the latest NAM game, released on... hmm 2007 even. Its pretty ok for mindless shooter, graphics are nice and good details on the jungle and hue city etc. Of course this is your average mindless shooter, nothing that any VTE fan would want to play.

"The Hell in Vietnam is a competent first-person shooter set in, yes, Vietnam. At first glance the gameplay is nearly identical to that of the Call of Duty series, both in graphics and in the objective-based action. On the positive side, the game looks great and runs very well even on modest hardware, but it soon becomes clear just why. Though nice from afar, textures blur when you come near and most foliage reveals itself to be made of annoying 2D sprite-like objects. Nonetheless, there is enough variation in weaponry, vehicles and missions to keep you interested. The non-stop action, punctuated with sneaky ambushes by charlie, does seem to give a sense of the hell that was Vietnam." -playwhat.com

Conflict Vietnam
Image
Released Sep 2004
homepage
"A solidly average game whose few original ideas are compromised by screwy controls, some pacing problems, and a punishing save-game system." -gamespot.com

"Conflict: Vietnam follows the progress of four US soldiers, cut off from their unit and behind enemy lines during the 1968 Tet Offensive. Tasked with fighting their way back to friendly lines, they are faced with day-to-day survival in a hostile environment where the enemy could be hiding anywhere and everywhere. They are un-concerned with the course of the war but brutally aware as to the presence of the Viet Cong and of finding any way they can to survive." -strategyinformer.com

"Conflict: Vietnam is a third person shooter where the player takes full control of all four squad members, utilising their different skill sets and tactical abilities to carefully out-flank enemies, neutralise targets and potential threats and make it back to friendly lines in one piece. The game is made up of fourteen huge missions, each with a number of individual and varying objectives. You will lead your squad through ruined temples, down Vietnamese rivers, into local villages (with frie" -gamershell.com

Whirlwind Over Vietnam
Image
Released 2006
homepage
"The novelty of the Vietnam War setting is just about all that Whirlwind Over Vietnam has going for it." -gamespot.com

"Whirlwind of Vietnam is a helicopter sim that depicts the most famous episodes of the war in a movie-style way. The main events of the game are well-known to the audience due to famous books and movies dedicated to the War such as We Were Soldiers, Apocalypse Now, Hamburger Hill and many others. The game features all the major weapons and military equipment of that period, both air and land - from firearms, grenade launchers and artillery to planes and vehicles on either side of the conflict. And of course, the main focus is on helicopters. The game will contain all major American helicopters with modifications for both US Army and Marine Corps. The game is flexible and has a lot of settings which allow varied flight behavior for the helicopter from realistic to arcade. This makes the game interesting for both hardcore gamers and casual players." -strategyinformer.com

Elite Warriors: Vietnam
Image
Image
Released Jan 2005
homepage
This game actually had quite interesting method of travelling in the map, it inspired me to try to make same sort of movement/campaign system for VTE, of course which I havent done so far. While this is another mindless shooter, it was rememberable for me. Also apparently now this game has its development tools released, they say you can do maps (terrains uhm), missions and campaigns.

The gameplay itself is mindless shooter type as I mentioned before, seems like its your averange dancing & frag type, completely without real life moving speed reference and such. It just feels so lame after ArmA that I could not even bare to complete the first mission as it was so bad. Funniest thing is that this is (supposed to be) perhaps the best NAM game out there, so heh go figure. The map movement thing is nice as I stated earlier, but eventually its quite lame too as when you move in the map, then you get contact and are thrown into this utterly lame mindless shoot'em up without any relation to the map movement. So while the map thing is nice idea, the games 3d backbone just fails so completely that the map thing loses its meaning.

"Elite Warriors is a budget-priced tactical shooter that's neither especially tactical nor satisfyingly action-packed." -gamespot.com

"In Elite Warriors: Vietnam, you will fight along side Green Beret commandoes as you conduct classified missions deep in Southeast Asia. By using patrol techniques still being used today in Iraq and Afghanistan you will rescue downed pilots, ambush convoys, seize enemy prisoners, and discover targets for air attacks. Elite Warriors: Vietnam faithfully recreates the secret world of small teams operating deep behind enemy lines. Players will lead these teams of Green Berets and Montagnard tribesmen deep into Laos, along the heavily occupied Ho Chi Minh Trail. Each mission offers multiple challenges giving players a new experience each time they play." -strategyinformer.com

Falcon 4.0 Vietnam Theater by yours truly, PMC. If you are into flight sims and NAM freak, you cannot miss this, there is no other Vietnam flight sim as realistic as this. Terrain is build from realistic DEM data, objectives are placed with real life DCW data and in the campaign squadrons are placed according to historical record. You will not find more realistic Vietnam air war simulation than this.

I've played most of these-the best would have to be

-Seal Team

-Battlefield Vietnam

-Vietcong

-Elite Warriors

and thats it.

Its a shame the mod community for OFP outdoes them all-but I appreciate it :D

I really like this game because the USMC troops look really good. They look like the USMC troops in "Full Metal jacket". But VTE Arma is the best Vietnam mod available as far as FPS is concerned. Just a brush up on the USMC troops and cough pith hemets for the NVA troops. :D
