Do we need one airbase in Russia?

Post by Red Dog » 2007-04-25 10:07:42

Here's the catch, I am working on the airbases up north and realized there is a very small part of russia implemented.

The only airbase/airstrip really in there is AKHTY. (I am not even sure that one is supposed to be there on the PDF map) but it seems it's a very small airstrip with no published info.

So the question is:
Is it necessary to have a major airbase in Russia (campaign purpose) bearing in mind that there are airbase in azerbaijan & armenia that might be on the russia side.

If not: I will leave russia without any airbase, not even an airstrip because I can't confirm AKTHY is in russian territory.

If yes, i will place a large airbase there. That won't be realistic but it could help campaign realism.

Thoughts?

Its clear that this airbase if added wont make a big difference in any campaign. I can go either way, but I believe we dont have any russian data for the area and I wasnt even aware that russian territory was on the theater boundarys.

Just above of Azerbaijan, on the Caspian seaside (North)
that's the small part of Russia.

So no airbase there, then.

Same for Kazakhstan (North of Turkmenistan) No airbases either)

Georgia is another story, we have airbases there...
Reminds me my map for Lomac in Georgia :D
It's funny how the flight sim theater touch each other Lomac/falcon ...

Falcon covers Europe, Balkan ... Then Lomac covers eastward in Crimea and Georgia, the F4 takes Over with Iran, south with ODS, even more far east with Afghan ...

Yeah, no reason to include it. :D

Probably safer to land in a field than on that strip! :D

Also, looks like the closest airfield left over from Soviet days is well north (on the Caspian Sea shore) of the little area of Russia that is on the Iran Theater map. That airfield is

Makhachkala/Uytash
Alternate names: Uytash
Location: 7 km S Kaspiysk, Dagestan, RU
Coordinates: 42°49'N 047°39'E
Elevation: 4 m (13 ft)
ICAO:URML
Runway:2640 m (8661 ft) (CONC)
Military units:Civilian

Handles medium-sized airliner traffic. Parking for 4 jets and dozens of smaller aircraft.

See this link for good source on USSR era airfields: http://www.russianairfields.com/index.htm

Zaggy have converted necessary data, but we could use that for the great Kaukasus project, hehe.... or maybe even Turkey and north to Russia. They are fighting continously up there.

hehehe

About 25 minutes. :) (That includes pasting and uploading the pics.) ;) Most of that was spent using Googlemaps to look in the general area to see if there were any other "discrete" airfields in the area.

The most important part of doing research is knowing where to look. ;)

(BTW, talk about SPARSE! That area looks like it would be beautifully rugged, but wow - not much around at all.)
