SRTM for Falklands 128

Post by ranger822 » 2007-03-26 15:34:37

communication with Blueprint indicates that the data is so big he can't process it with his current computer. So, SRTM is a no-go until he gets a 64bit computer. . . SRTM would be ideal due to the terrain on the islands since it would help compensate for so little variety on most of the island.

Also, given the lack of civilization - tile sets will need to be cleaned up both for night tiles - to remove any night lighting and to remove the roads, and villages stuff. . . the terrain will need a bit of sanitizing.

Lastly, the rocky cliffs of the northern shores of the two main Falkland Islands might benefit from the use of some sort of Rock or mountain LODs that might create the illusion of some interesting cliffs, rocks, etc. This is just an idea but could compensate for a lack of SRTM or further enhance the appearance. The idea is to create a series of interlocking rocks, cliffs, etc that could be skinned and present a real obstacle and visual appearance to blend with the terrain mesh.

Boats on dry land

Given Peled's findings it is clear that a scrub or the terrain and tiling will be to be done - maybe there is some tool to check the coastline and adjust as necessary.

If you want to I can run it on a 64 bit machine for you. Just mail instructions and software to strikerAT87th.org. Then I'll mail the results back.

SRTM

Thanks 87th_striker - -

Let me contact Blueprint and see if that can be done . . . I am willing. It is early in the project and it would be nice to get SRTM completed before I start the database.

@CCC - do you want to stick with Korea tiles - maybe replace with Hi-Tiles and use SeasonSwticher for Autumn - or consider doing something else - like using Twisters tiles and then adding in new tiles or use Hi-tiles. One idea comes to mind. Use Korea-Tiles winter or autumn for Falkland Islands, add a few extra tile sets to remove the civilization, then use Twisters tiles for the rest of South America? In my opinion we could do most of south america very roughly - and perhap just concentrate on a narrow corridor of detailed tiling around the airbases. This way we get great looking terrain for most of the flight areas the theater will actually use. Having a lot of water makes this terrain - much easier to manage. We can also not be bothered so much with links - - connect the airbases and a few supplementals and done. What do you think? I guess what would be really the maximum project is if we could get good clean satellite imagery and make all the islands phototiled. Do we know whether or not that is possible now. If it is, phototiling seems to be a very doable project if the terrain tile limit isn't an issue.

SRTM for Israeli Theater and Falklands 128

Post by ranger822 » 2007-04-09 17:31:44

I agree - Korea will be easiest and quickest. PHototiles may only be possible for Stanley, Mt. Pleasant and GooseGreen.

I will put together the info package and request for Blueprint.

Korea Hi--Tiles

Post by ranger822 » 2007-04-15 12:25:00

Given the issues with the old korea tile set - seems we could have a quick fix for tiles by adopting Hi-Tiles. Use the same autumn season switcher - Maybe I can still revived the opportunity to get Tom Waelti to let me have access to a few PSD's to create some new sets that would be useful for Falklands.

the HiTiles Autum/Fall would fit best from the existing falcon tiles.... sooo far...

question comes up again about a test version of that theater....
