Hi, I don't know if anyone has already thought of this but what if the OFP objects were just moved and renamed to the ArmA paths to be used in WrpTool so you wouldn't have to use the replace function?

The OFP objects in the ArmA paths could be compressed into a file and released as a pack so that other people could download and quickly use them in WrpTool for making new islands or replacing OFP objects or viewing islands made with ArmA objects.

If the matching ArmA model height is different the model in the pack could be modified to fit to the same height as the ArmA ones so you wouldn't have to fiddle with the height placements. ODOLExplorer exports the OFP models pretty well, and after modifying them they can be binarized again to be used in WrpTool.

Very basic placeholder models could be made to stand in for ArmA models that don't have matching OFP ones. You can get the dimensions of ArmA models by using the "boundingbox _object" command in ArmA, then make a model that has those same dimensions in O2 and the building should fit to about the same height as the ArmA model. That's how I figured out the placements for the SLX People models.

The pack could continually be updated by people making placeholder models.

Maybe I'll try doing it myself sometime when I play around with islands again, but I don't have the time right now.

Anyway just an idea, thank you for all your work on everything Snake Man! :]

In WrpTool this would work, yes...

Or perhaps do a .bat file to rename the objects, at least for advanced users who can read readmes :)

I guess it would be something really simple as:

Indeed, this of course is hard manual labor as was the work so far I did for the above objects replacements and alignments on the other topic.

Ah thats a good tip. But does that return any clear number about the height of the alignment, or do we still have to manually tweak it until its correct?

That was really good idea and certain way to get things done. However at the moment I feel its too much work, that figuring out the new ODOL format would be more easy in the long run. Of course any placeholder models made NOW are better than figuring out the ODOL if it takes like X amount of weeks to do it.

Okay but lets recap the task:

1) use boundingbox object command ingame ArmA to get the outside boundary values of ArmA objects.
2) In O2 model a simple box with these values, then figure out the alignment.
3) Use the placeholder objects in ArmA ca\etc\ paths in WrpTool to create your island.
4) Finally just use the island ingame with REAL ArmA object addons.

Am I missing something on that task?

I think the sizes of the model files are small enough that it wouldn't be too big for someone to just pack up their own folder. Writing a .bat to do it and keep it updated if any of the models need to be changed or something would be too much effort for not enough benefit. The OFP SLX replacement pack had most OFP resistance trees and buildings in it and it wasn't that big. I think a lot were made into MLODs too so they were bigger, the packed models would be binarized which makes them even smaller. At any rate I'm not going to be doing it for a while if ever, so whatever. :p

I guess it would depend on what LOD the object height is based on in WrpTool and what LOD the boundingbox command uses. I think there's also a command that can shoot a line through an LOD to see if it hits something, so maybe that could also be scripted to measure the geometry LOD to find the dimensions. That might take more work though. Overall I think any of these methods might require some manual tweaking in the end.

Thanks. :] From my point of view since I have no idea of how long it would take to figure out a file format and write programs I can't analyze the costs/benefits of working on the placeholders versus figuring out the new ODOL format, so I guess that's up to you. :p

Yep, that's the idea! Depending on what LODs the boundingbox uses and what LODs WrpTool uses the values you get might mean that the box wouldn't need to be realigned. It could also depend on the object, some buildings have stuff going into the ground but objects like lamp posts or telephone poles for example might just stop at the ground on all LODs so the bounding box might return the real bottom and top of the model for all LODs. You could also use the boundingbox command to check where the changed OFP models need to be moved to be realigned. It doesn't seem that difficult to me, though I guess it could be time consuming because I don't know how many objects are misaligned so they might all have to be changed, which would take a while. It would be great if there were new tools to access the new ODOL models though!

Edit: I think I'm confusing the boundingBox command with the selectionPosition command, which is the one I used for the SLX People models. SelectionPosition returns positions that seem to fit exactly to where the vertexes in O2 are supposed to be. I'm not sure if boundingbox works the same way, but I've used particles with the positions returned by both so they should both return similar values that should transfer directly to O2 to make the placeholder box in exactly the same position as the original model.

The procedure for making the placeholder box might go like this:
1. Create a box and delete the faces.
2. Select the vertices and use the vertex edit mode to select each vertex and type in the numbers for each position you got from the boundingbox command and click apply to move the vertex, then do it to the next, etc.
3. Click ok on the vertex edit window and then select all and use the convex hull thing to make the faces.

I tried the boundingbox, it returns ok values but the selectionPosition just returns [0,0,0] for me, maybe I'm not using it correctly.

I placed a house, on its init line I wrote

And I tried all sorts of names like "LOD 0", "LOD 0.0" etc, no luck. Heh any idea how this supposed to work? I'm lost with it pretty much :)

SelectionPosition returns a single xyz value for a named selection, like the named selections in character models or vehicle models for things that animate. Even though a named selection might have multiple vertices SelectionPosition only returns the location of one of them so you can't get the whole selection shape from it. :/ You have to give it the selection name so if you wanted to you could try using the "componentXX" named selections that the fire/view/regular geometry LODs use. (_object selectionPosition "Component01")

First post now updated, not much changes though, the Q's items have been added and list sorted alphabetically. I don't think I've added much to the text file I have here, but the first post now contains the contents of my WRP terrain project OFP object list. There might be few objects that I've discovered and added to my ArmA WrpTool without adding them into this list.
