Post by Malc » 2001-07-26 19:29:00

Is there anywhere a definitive guide for using Tacedit to place objects?

What I'm trying to do specifically is place for example 3 different port groups, but have them all tied to the one reference point, or have several sets of buildings tied to the one city name.

Can anyone gimme some pointers please...?

Beyond our tutorial, not that I know.

Port groups? I'm not sure that I follow. Are you talking about the paths now?

Sorry I'm bit rusty as the last time my tacedit was running was like hmm.. 3-4 months ago Image

Not overly sure what I mean Snake! Let me give you an example...

I have three objectives in Tacedit, all three are the type 7A5 port. I want to call all three the same name, and have linked all three together using the "add link" option. Only trouble is, why I load up the te_new in F4, I am getting three port symbols on the map, one for each port I have placed. Obviously, I only want one symbol on the map cos strictly speaking they are all in the same place (If you catch my meaning)

I hope this makes it clearer....

Are you talking a 'port' like where ships berth and tie up at??? "The ship is going into port for repairs" kinda thing???

(Not that i know much about tacedit anyway..)

The Link is only for ground unit movement, it doesnt "make them one" of thats what you mean. If City A has link to City B, then groun units like tanks can move from City A to City B.

Yes I understand. Hmm the one port object is too small for you? Well I'm not sure how to blend together objects with tacedit, if thats even possible.

I havent paid too much attention to Port objects on my Falcon adventures. Have you checked how Korean object list have arranged the ports?

While we are on the Tacedit subject, the v1.29 and 2.0 will crash on me very often when zooming in, anybody else has seen this?

"While we are on the Tacedit subject", I'm can't seem to add ships to a TE.
I did it once, but it only appeared in the "Edit" (@ TE) screen, but in the arena the ship wasn't there.

Also, when i tryied to remake the mission (from scratch again) the ship didn't appear even in the "Edit" screen.

What is the most safe and (all in all) bestversion of TacEdit?
Or, if someone knows what i'm doing wrong, "what am i doing wrong?"

Heheh

Last version that runs stable on my machine is v1.28 it just lacks the copy-paste which is very good when adding units.

Tacedit news.

Thanks to some arm twisting from snakeman, 2.0.16 version is now available on the downloads page. This version has support for the following:

create pakmap/save pakmap - generates a pak map/saves it, for you based on the primary objectives and the occupation map of the theater.
save bitmap - you can save the current screen view as a bitmap. This can help with creation of pak map images, and some other stuff.

On windows 95/98 you can crash tacedit by zooming in too much on the map view, no fix for this, but its not a problem on windows 2000/xp.

Another version of tacedit coming up shortly, will include several fixes
Checking for duplicate ID's on read in
Zoom in both directions
Better team editor
More team variables
Slightly better menu layout
Resizeable occupation map window

And depending on what other time I get, some other useful features.

ok - new day - newer tacedit

now reads in objectives from the base senario if required. Also a bit of UI stuff to do with filenames.

As a bonus, a new terrainview is also on offer, well two actually. Only difference is one will read the large terrain format, and the other the original terrain format.

V1.52 for both.

A couple things:
Is there a way I can check and try to figure out why some squads aren't generating missions, while others generate hundreds of barcaps (when I don't want them to)?

Also, is there a way to load other wind/weather info besides clouds and such? And will there be a weather-creator utility further down the road? Thanks

Are they too far away from the FLOT?

Do you have a enough ground forces in the FLOT?

You can specify air tasks from the Teams menu, you usually need to edit them as the PAK's and coordinates refer to korean ID's and coordinates.

Yeah, there are plenty of ground forces...

For example, at Kangung I have 1 Block 40 squad, one block 50 squad, and an F-4E squad. The Blk 50 squad tasks mainly barcaps with a few sead strikes, the block 40 tasks all barcaps, and the F-4 squad isnt getting tasked at all. My A-10 squads in/around seoul have gotten a total of one mission tasked. The F-5's are getting a little tasking, but mainly it's just F-14/15/16/18 flying barcaps. So far, my bomber squads have only been tasked with one mission each.

Also, I have my sliders for ground attack set to full and the dca slider to nothing.

Tacedit 2.27

Big change here is help file. Explains what SOME of the fields mean. Also a few fixes, a few small changes etc.

Well - in fact...
code:

Code: Select all

Link mode UI sorted out a little
Clear all for CMP view fixed.
Make links in an area - use with caution!!
Restructured basic hierarchy of objects to include teams and managers
Check for duplicate camp IDs too.
Beginings of a help system.
Schedule display (no editor yet)
small fix to squad dialog.
map views preserved in a single session

I'm afraid you'll have to be careful not to zoom in too much. The win98 stuff just can't handle large scaled bitmaps.

Anway 2.29 is about to come out with a few new improvements.

I've read all the threads on this topic. It's really nice to see how Tacedit evolves. Great effort really. I'm actually a sort of beginner to the TacEdit. I gather from many sources that Tacedit allows adding units from F4Browse and so they can surface in missions.

Can I open a mission (@TE) without opening the Korean map and the String file? If not, which map and which String file(s) need to be opened?

Thanks in advance.

Off topic but on its way.
quote:I'm gonna try without zooming...and / or with coordinates...
You cannot zoom. I believe in 64 theater you can zoom one time (one zoom click) but in 128 theater it crashes even on the first click.

I'm not sure though, as the crash always requires windows reboot I'm not too eager to test it out as it has been confirmed already as win9X limitation.

Yeah wink2y and xp sucks indeed I have NO intentions of installin new piece of windows anytime soon, yet I was forced to do this on my 2nd game machine just to get tacedit zooming.

Placing links according to THR file (relief map) is rather nasty if you cannot zoom :)

offtopic again: btw I have placed all links to the euro theater what you got now totally without THR relief map. Damned some links might be through water I dont know ;)

Version 2.29 now available.
Update the export function to include extra header names (keep access sweet).
Fixed a few team variables and documented them a little more.
Redone the team bonuses page - used the grid control. Moved some things off the page.
Unit flags redone now, air and ground separate flags available.

I'm much happier with the display of bonuses and mission priorities now, as you can see a number of them at once and edit them directly. Some more of the variables documented in the help too.

The trouble is I no longer run Win98, and the though of reinstalling it just to track down this issue seems like a lot of work. If I knew what the issue actually was under W98, I guess it could be solved. I had to go to weird and wonderful stuff in terrainview to get W98 to display large bitmaps, and it makes things very messy.

You don't need the background image, when making links, so I suggest you just leave it out if doing so.

Sorry about this. :(

You just need the .thr backdrop (Relief map) so you see where the roads are located. Make links between objects only along the roads (where you have roads ;) ).
Have a look at the korean linking together with the relief map to get an idea.

On the Win98 issue, I've still a VC++ version on my fathers Win98 rig, so I could try to recreate the crash there.

Interesting. Codec told me that you can make links anywhere you want, but using roads its just not that cost effective to the ground units.
quote:so I could try to recreate the crash there.
I never oppose any fixes and I hate wink2y/xp but still I'm comfortable to install such thing just for tacedit usage.

In the mean time with my normal setup I avoid the zooming with bitmaps.

There are far more important features which we need than to make zooming work under win9x. For example the link drawing queueueueu process thing.
