need a source map

I'd like to start converting Balkan to ONC type maps, but I realized I lack a decent source map.

I always found the current (and AF as well) Balkan map particularily ugly
I think I remember that it wasn't so ugly back in the beginning SP2 days, I may be wrong though
Unfortunately, the best map I could come up with is this one, which is the one that was used to make my original white background kneemap.

If any one of you is aware of this map having been used in the UI, I would dearly appreciate to get it in 2048x2048 minimum.
Any help greatly appreciated

Image
except that may be after all a cate map as I don't see the roads & rivers either ...
is cate able to do balkan maps ... I think I remember not, but I wouldn't trust my memory

I may have the 2byte balkans L2 somewhere, but also we should have the 4byte CATE exe, if I'm correct... so making CATE bitmap out of balkans L2 should not be a problem.

okay,

What do I need to give you then to get a 2048 map like the one above but with roads and river?
No hurries Snakeman; just don't want this to last 6 months, but I'm stuck anyway, so as long as I don't get such a map, no ONC map will ever be made available

Thanks
Olivier

Oh it needs to be same as above, well then it needs to be done in Terrainview and for that I need the L2 (2 or 4 byte, wont matter) and more importantly the TDF files... which I don't have. You could ask around from Codec/Washout if they still have them, but its quite unlikely they do after all these years.

No ONC balkan kneemap then, whatever, there are plenty of theaters around...

Do you know the precise lat/lon coordinates of Balkans theater?

Maybe if I still have the NON-spherical L2 converter by Miran Klemenc (or use perl scripts), I could produce the TDF files and then create the image you want.

Snake,

A friend of mine was able to get the 4 corner coordinates of the current theater:
Lower Left: N36,37.496 E010, 63.997
Upper Left :N45,49.275 E010, 63.997
Lower Right: N36,37.496 E22,27.523
Upper Right: N45,49.275 E24,11.760

Hope that's helpful to you for that map creating :)

Thanks
Rd

Can you quickly calculate the center point out of those coords? :)

N41,13.385 E017,06.799
Should be the center ...

Any hope to get one Snake?

Well the problem is that Dem2Terrain creates the TDF as spherical, Balkans is non-spherical theater, then the perl scripts only read the proper size chunk of dem data and Miran Klemenc's DEM2L2 util is not available for download. I do have it on some backup dvdr, but no idea where.

If you can quickly find me the util, I can then use it to create the bmp for you.

I have no idea what you're talking about Snake.
So i'll take that as a No, sorry it's not possible to do :)

my 0.002c,

if we can not find that tool, can we use existing tool to generate a map - then use PHOTOSHOP or other paint tool to stretch/adjust the map for use? say, i think most simmers flying in center part of theater, and rarely flying to edges of map - where the distortion is most noticable.
if somebody is good at photoshop tool, we may use some major cities/objectives as mark/reference point, for stretching/adjusting map to fit.

The proper spherical bmp I can do in 5 minutes, is that okay?

You could use cate to make a make .bmp of the roads/rivers then just overlay it on the TV map? This would be more accurate theater wise since .tdf files are usually a mess and alot of hand tileing was done for Balkans>?

 could you do that for Taiwan to get a clean 2048x2048 map or bigger? THAT would help a lot!

Started working on a lower quality source map to make my ONC chart for the balkans.

I'm still looking for a better 2048x2048 map if someone stumble on it, and CATE maps for roads and rivers ....

hmm... aren't those yellow dots larger cities? i also wonder Yugoslav has so many highly-popluated cities.. much more developed than Italy!!

BTW.. i hope the main cities of PAK map could be marked on the map. i am not familiar with the geo info in this area so.. when UI shows air/ground operation targeting at some [city obj], it takes me a loooong while to locate it..thus make me a bit late to join the hot party.

Yes, the yellow spots are cities. I wondered the same ... about having more larher cities up there than in Italy.
Does,'t sound very logic to me
