Russian features data missing

Post by Snake Man » 2007-02-23 21:06:41

We need some Russian DCW feature data of roads, rivers, citys and airbases. Anyone have any ideas?

Image

I ran some scans with google earth and found these airports:

airbases in russia
vladivostok intl, 43'23N, 132'09E: single runway, 230 / 050 ?. unknown terrain.
SE from vladivostok, 43'14N, 132'19E: single runway, 190 / 010 ?. wet green terrain.
at Nikolayevka, 43'05N, 133'11E: single runway, 190 / 010 ?. urban.
?, 44'01N, 132'13E: single runway, 200 / 020 ?. urban.
?, 44'26N, 132'07E: single runway, 320 / 140 ?. farming.
?, 44'18N, 132'33E: single runway, 260 / 080 ?. urban.

Heh yeah everybody always solved the russian data issue... too bad that nobody ever posts a download link to the "fix" :D

If someone can point out the airbase DATA for me, I can add them manually. But there still is the roads, rivers and citys which would be great to have as in real life.

Some danish guy first, but Zaggy have it and can release it to you. Drop him a line.....

Or if you want to, fix it yourself...... It's not that difficult....... use the data converter from http://www.safe.com/ then you can change from Lambert projection to normal geographic projection.

I definitely would like to have the Russian data in usable format.

So 87th_striker, how about a small tutorial?

http://www.simmersworld.com/~openskin/terres.htm

Yeah I solved it a while back... Even had the procedures and etc typed up, alas I have lost them. Tho if you go to the above link, you should find the converted data...

Someone mailed me a few years back and said one of the datasets had the wrong data in it tho, so be careful! If youre after the data and one of the sets is in fact busted, I will happily work with any of you guys to build a converter procedure and code again...

YES, FME did SOME of the job, but not all...

IIRC, you converted in FME from Lamberts to Geographical. Then you had to cut a heap of data out of the end of the file, paste it into a text file, and run it thru a small parsing app i made to re-order the data in the correct way... Then you had to fix the header up... Its been so long, and when i did it, NO ONE was interested anymore! But hey, its there if ppl want it!

Zagster-

I completely missed your solving of the Russian data issue! Sorry!

I'd be interested in resolving the Alaskan data, too, if you want. :)

I downloaded the Russia data, but there is a problem, big problem for Korea 128 as just the parts we need is missing. When I try to load the russia central data into Dem2Terrain, it displays nothing, no error message, no feature data visible.

Image

I have no understanding the e00 files when I quickly took a look at them, only thing I noticed the one string of digits was not in order (1, 2, 3 etc) in central data as it was in east/west data.

Zaggy, could you please guide us how to fix the Russia Central data?

Snakey: Damn it... We'll were gonna have to do some work on Central Russia again... I havent got the energy this week tho (been sick since saturday - havent eaten, or spoken... Ulcers at the top of my throat. Im surviving on water and throat spray!)...

We will need:
- a working FME install --> To convert the projections
- Central Russian Data --> To convert!
- a text editor --> for a bit of Manual Editting + cut/paste
- a RAD Tool (like VB or C#) --> To write an app

The last three are easy. But I NEED an FME install; anyone?

T-Rex: The Alaskan data is fine (well thats not 100% correct, weird things happen with vector data VERY far north, but its fixable in the TDF's). The problem is, F4 (like F-22's) doesnt like the IDL, and therefore you Logitudes get buggered up > 180E. Instead of going 179E, 180E, 179W, 178W (if you get my meaning), it just keeps going east! Like 179E, 180E, 181E, 182E!

But yeah, we NEED FME someone!!!

Sorry about the health issues. :( Nutrition is over-rated from what I hear.... ;) :)

One of my long-suffering goals for F4 (along with my An-2 cockpit) is a theater that encompasses the Aleutian Islands. So, that pesky dateline would pose a problem.

It can certainly wait, though. :thumbs:

I know ALL about the 14 day trial... ;) I pretty much need a crack tho... ;)

BUT, i went thru my old back up CD's from Dec2004/Jan2005, and guess what i found???

Found my Parsing Tool, as well as the RAW converted data, from FME! So i just need to 'rediscover' my procedures (cos i cant find the procedure list i THOUGHT i had), and were in business... I THINK with the data in the state it's in, its a case of cut/paste some stuff that needs to be run thru the parser and reformated, paste the results back in, then modify the header back to what it is in the ORIGINAL e00 file (cos DEM2Terrain wont work, if you leave the modified header that FME creates)...

Give me a few weeks... Been sick (Again) and have LOTS of school-work to catch up on...

Sorry...

And yeah Rex, IDL will screw all West Longitudes, unless there is a work-around i dont know about, or the code has since been modified.. ie:

Code: Select all

// longitude (double) is the theater longitude, ie, can be greater than 180
// displayLongitude (double) is the longitude that 'pilots' see (eg 172W)

if(longitude > 180)
{
    displayedLongitude = 180 - (longitude - 180);
}

// and then to go back
// displayLongitudeDirection (char) is the E or W on the displayed
// logitude the 'pilot' sees

if(displayLongitudeDirection == 'W')
{
   longitude = 180 - (displayLongitude - 180);
}
Very basic, but a concept none the less... But i know SFA about the F4 code...

I found the L2/O2 and my 'fixed' TDF's for Bering Straits too (IIRC, i had to render the TDF's separately for each side of the IDL, then merge the two... So in a way, i created THREE theaters --> 1, Far East Russia; 2, Alaska; 3, Bearing Straits (ie, the combined DEM's). I had to do this, because DEM2Terrain doesnt understand the e00's loaded for the OTHER side of the IDL. Its looking for >180E, when the e00's are registered to <180W>)...

OK... Im uploading a test set now... Im trying to find some russian data here so i can check locally, but to no avail yet... BUT Snakey, if you want to try them, they should be uploaded in about 90mins from now (yes, im still on slow net!)...

http://www.simmersworld.com/~openskin/d ... tralv2.zip

I had to re-code the re-parsing app that i used to re-format the re-projected data... hahahaa... but yeah, the original app was coded with Visual Basic Express 2005 Beta2, and it didnt want to compile in Visual Studio 2005 Pro SP1.

BUT, the job seems to now be done...

Thank you Zaggy, much appreciated.

I'll try to redownload it soon, I tried now (whatever time it is) and it was only 7mb and apparently incomplete. When its done I'll surely give it a try for the Korea 128 terrain.
