Afghanistan sitrep for SP
Afghanistan Theater situation report for SP!
Afghanistan Theater page
The rugged mountain terrains of Afghanistan finally see some viper action in the form of Falcon 4.0 SPx compatible theater. The goal of this theater if to provide present day scenario using the SP3 entities (aircrafts/weapons etc).
Campaigns consist of Enduring Freedom which we are trying to make as realistic as possible with the current F4 campaign engine and theater size. We cannot include those long range bomber bases which are not in the reach of this theater. Also as the Enduring Freedom in real life changed; for example day 1 the Afghanistan was totally hostile environment, today there is A-10's and helicopter gunships stationed over there.
Other two campaigns include all out high action war fictional style using present day weapons.
Just yesterday our great airbase specialist Red Dog provided this theater with realistic airbase list. They are now implemented into the theater objectives with real runway headings and names etc.
Linking was done, but due new L2 file which we needed for the airbases we had to scrap the bridges and there fore the links are just faint skeleton right now. More work is needed in this department.
Tiles are going to be reworked soon, right now we are temporarily using ODS just to give idea where to roads and such things are. AFGHANISTAN WILL NOT USE ODS TILES IN FIRST RELEASE.
Something else important I most likely missed, will be posting updates when something pops up.

I created some 512x512 res tiles for Afghanistan using the great tutorial made by Rom. So far so good, when I was flying over my afghan-desert-road... it gave me somewhat believable feeling.
Was thinking that maybe I'll do whole tile-set for Afghanistan now using the non-existant skills I have. It will mostly suck but until some Texture God's will help us out, that all we get.

Basic tile-set for Afghanistan is now complete, minus the coast city tiles (which are used only on place I think).
Some interesting trivia for the 512x512 resolution tiles in the terrain. The H tiles come to amount of 78.1mb which are the 512 res. When we put the tiles through runtiles.bat it creates 256 res M tiles, 128 res L tiles and 16 res T tiles. The total size of texture.zip is 61mb.
There is somewhat increasing amount of that "shimmering" effect on the terrain when flying.
All the tiles now made for 512 is by me, which means they suck. I wish that someday one of those Artist God's put their hands on the textures and make really awesome tile-set. The amount of detail you can put into the terrain with 512x512 tiles is incredible.
Anyways, Afghanistan now has completely new, completely unique terrain tiles.

First release candidate version sent to T-Rex for testing.
Only tiles not 512 res at the moment are coast-city tiles (used once in Pakistan I think).
Did some mad linking for the objectives, over 2200 done last night/today. All PAK cities are linked in Afghanistan, China and Pakistan now which theoretically allows us to have working ground war... remains to be seen.
Next couple of days I'll be putting finishing touches and fixing bugs that are discovered.
After that its public beta release time. The beta v0.1 installer size will most likely be 87mb if we use the current 512 terrain tiles.

Any word on kneemaps from Red Dog? I'm SO looking forward to them that I'd seriously think of waiting until they're available to do any public release.
