Europe mod for AF - UI enhance

I did some new flags for Eu theater:

NATO 2
NEUTRAL 3 (swizz, austria,sweden)

PRC - UN 5 (strongly neutral)
WPACT 6 (emblem on red beckground)

Strange is, that NATO flag, I have found somewhere is 2950 in size (53*31 8bit), but all my flags (53*31 8bit) are just 2455 in size.
I did them using Photoshop...?

I did also updated maps for campaign

...and I am sorry for that sitting fly in bottom right corner of the AWACS screen - I wanted to beat off it first, but I thought better of it latter (look at the another scrap nearby UK :mrgreen: )

Dont worry , there is no strong commie propaganda. There is written something like (really fancy-free translation) - "protection of the Czech airspace is not just a task for AD(SAMS) and air squadrons/units, but also army AD units" (quite stupid statement heh, but I really loved these girls as a young boy... :P )

I just downloaded those two files, are these your contribution for the PMC Europe Theater that I should queue them for next release?
It is originaly made for updated European terrain - water, forrests, cities, river and road features..., all is extracted directly from new European terrain thr.

It will be the first release of newly tiled and textured Europe(prepreAlpha). I can study, howto put new UI files into the sim. Bu there is written in the wiki, that described process is obsolete...!? I dont know, perhaps it is obsolete for FF5, but not for AF. But still - It would be my first try to play with UI. I am getting very busy, so somebody experienced would speed up the process.

I can make secret link for You and Sherlock for example, you would try to implement files + add dogfight module. Then we can show the link.

But of course, you can use it for official/contemporary PMC Europe as well, but the terrain is not the same....

There is an update of the big AWACS map. I have added water layer yet (for pilots not very familiarized to Europe geography).
I also outlined Kaliningrad borded (coastline previously missed).

As I said before...I'd be glad to give you some guidance/help on the AF UI. Once you work with it a little bit you will get the hang of where the files are located, etc.

I tried to do mapfiles by myself. I installed Perl and studied wiki.
Ok, I was able to replace main campmap. But I was not able to find the place, awacs map is located(neither for default Balcan and Korea. So I replaced main campmap by AWACSmap for test purpose also...

BTW - I also created small camp map, but did not use it. I think the current one is ok for such a small screen/resolution.

I think in real it is a little bit different, then in wiki page, due to the AF diferences (file locations/names). It was quite easy to find main campmaf files. But for the flag files it would be worse. I can prepare idx/rcs flag files quite easily I think. But there are many additional edits needed for flags activation. Without updated tutorial I should not try it.

Here my questions:
1)Where is the awacs map located please? (I guess this was not ever defined for PMC Eu, so I would enlarge my question - how to add working dedicated awacs screen please?

2) how to add flags to AF? We can imagine, I have europeflags.idx and europeflags.rsc files already created.

3) Howto activate/prepare working dogfight module for this theater (AF)? I was able to add about ten additional ACs into default Korean/Balcan AF dogfight module about 3 years ago. It worked and I can refresh this process. But in this Eu theatre, there is not dogfight module activated, it is completly missing.
This third point is the most important I think.

Art\Resource\CampMap.rsc

Add your AWACS map to that, the same one that has the main campaign map (so there will be 2 files merged into the .rsc file). Name them as follows:

BIG_MAP_ID = Normal campaign map
BIG_AWACS_MAP_ID = AWACS background map

That's how it is for Korea. Should work the same for Europe.

Yes, you are true.
I did not realized 64 segment is 4 times smaller :lol: .
I looked at the file "Art\Resource\CampMap.rsc" (about 8MB) (Europe without AWACS is about 16MB) and started to looking for another 8MB file inside folder structure. But 64 theater is 4 times smaller, so the file is about 4MB + another 4MB Awacs file = 8MB both! Thanks.

Ok, but I dont know howto merge both map files.

I have two fliped tga files prepared in c:\Perl\bin:
BIG_MAP_ID.tga
BIG_AWACS_MAP_ID.tga

If I run these scripts:
./tga2res.pl BIG_MAP_ID.tga BIG_MAP_ID
./tga2res.pl BIG_AWACS_MAP_ID.tga BIG_AWACS_MAP_ID

it creates 4 files:
BIG_MAP_ID.idx
BIG_MAP_ID.rcs
BIG_AWACS_MAP_ID.idx
BIG_AWACS_MAP_ID.rcs

I dont know, howto merge them into single file (then rename to "campmap.*")
I tried this script:
./tga2res.pl BIG_AWACS_MAP_ID.tga BIG_MAP_ID
I hoped it merges "BIG_AWACS_MAP_ID.tga" into already created "BIG_MAP_ID.*" files.(about 16MB => enlarge to about 32MB)
But it does not work this way.
"BIG_MAP_ID.*" files stay still the same 16MB in size. (is it totally wrong way??? perhaps there is some dedicated script for mergeing 2 files??)

I tried "./tga2res.pl BIG_MAP_ID.tga BIG_AWACS_MAP_ID.tga BIG_MAP_ID" also. But it does not work too.

I think my new normal/AWACS campmapfile should be about 32MB.
Please help.

I was thinking of it more and I guess I should use different script when adding multiple images.
So I need "irc2res.pl" + config file (just like in case of flags!)

The only problem is, I dont have irc2res.pl script. There is "irc2res1.pl" file in terrainscripts package/zip.
I googled "irc2res.pl", but downloaded corupted file in all cases... :cry:

Ok, no 1) downed as well!

I have found irc2res.pl over the web and downloaded it sucefully (it really produces different result then "irc2res1.pl" file).
I did simple config file and I have merged campmap(33MB). I tested it, it works fine, campmap is auto-changed according to squadron choosed (AWACs or normal).

I was thinking about flags as well (2).
The process described in wiki is quite complicated.
I tried just a simple test. Installed Izrael MK2 and copied flag.* files into Eu folder.
I saw Izrael,Syria,Egypt etc images in my OOB window. I did not update anything else (but perhaps something was updated during Izrael installation already..?). I also tried default Balcan flags and it works as well.

But if I copy my Eu flag.* files, it does not work. I can see just solid colour filled rectangles, also OOB info is missing.

No, you need to write the image names into the .irc file.

I have flag.rsc/idx already done now.
I guess the names I have used are new for F4. It is my problem I think.

But I guess - if I can avoid complicated task (putting it into whole F4 structure), I should try to decode used names in for example Balcan flag.* files. Then rename my images to match those names already hnown for F4 system. I did not try to reverse-engeneer flag.* files yet. But the names are prehaps still the same like in Flag tutorial (Balkan too)...?
It is just a wild thought.

When you unpack campmap.idx you get the .irc file, in this file the awacs map should be listed so it will show up in-game.
But campmap problem is aready solved.

Only flag problem (no 2)) is not solved yet.

Flags are still done the same as in the Wiki. You CANNOT use any other names than the Korea default; use the same name given in the .irc file for each flag. Just keep your europe teams correlated to the Korea team Names and the flags will work out correct:

Flags are still done the same as in the Wiki. You CANNOT use any other names than the Korea default; use the same name given in the .irc file for each flag. Just keep your europe teams correlated to the Korea team Names and the flags will work out correct:
Yes Sherlock, I try to do it this way right now.
Instead of putting new names into the system - use already linked names and just change the raw data/bitmaps.
When it is done in separated file, it should not affect original theaters. That is why Izrael flag.* files work perfectly in Eu theater. They use old names for textures I guess.

But it is different according to wiki tutor. In wiki, we are putting new bitmap names into the system.

Here just for record (What I tried to do before- wiki):
1 - prepared flags.idx and flags.rsc files

2 - tried to make art\resource\flags.irc file inside EU folder structure
according to wiki - it should contain similar row [LOADRES] BALKANFLAGS_RESOURCE "art\resource\balkanflags"

I tried to add [LOADRES] FLAGS_RESOURCE "art\resource\flags"

I was not sure about this second step, so I searched default AF folders. There are only idx/rcs files for flags.
I did not find any "irc" file for flags. It is the first difference.

3 - I tried to update art\Main_res.lst file (adding path to new "irc" file)
4- I edited art\campaign\intel\int_win.scf file according to wiki
5- I tried to edit art\campaign\select\ChalLvl.scf file. But there is no "BITMAP" string in this file (so I did not).
second difference
6 - I edited art\planner\oob.scf file. I changed desired "BUTTONIMAGES".
7 - I skiped to edit tac_pua.scf file. I guess it is related to the TE (tactical engagement)
8 - I edited art\main\imageids.id file to match my bitmap names.

The result was "partial sucess".

But partial means I can not to do it this way.
So the wiki tutorial is obsolete for AF I think.

I must rename all flag files now(OOB_FLAGS_WPACT_DRK to OOB_FLAGS_NKOREA_DRK for example). I must make new config file and build new flags.* pair. Ufff

when working on AF it is very, very handy to have the old Falcon 4.0 loaded with the SuperPAK 4.2 patch applied. This is because AF is very closely based off of the SP4.2 patch code base.

From the SP4.2 you can get teh .irc files you need to work on AF. Can you load the old Falcon 4.0 with the SP4.2 patch? If not I can upload the .irc files if you can't.

The perl file "ProcIDX.pl" does this I think?

I have problem to instal SP4 for some reason. I have still F4 vanilla install in C: root protected. I guess for sucessfull install I should clean up the regiser or something.

But for now - to be clear - I guess i will not bother with "irc" files. I will just create new idx/rcs pair. I will let Eu folder structure rather "minimalistic". As I said - in Israel everything works fine and there are only few(almost no) additional files. I guess they took original flags.* pair and changed just about 5 flags/bitmaps.

Original AF korean flags.* files:
flags.idx 3 068 in size
flags.rsc 83 908 in size

Israel files are exactly same in size. So beyond the used flags, they have the same amount of balast - I guess.
But I dont have all unpacked flags here. Just the flags I created + NATO flag. I can not find "reverse" translation script for converting default flags.* 2 tga.

You already have that file. It's the "ProcIDX" file that unpacks the rsc file to the TGA files.

I have found some unused ground unit/objectives icons in F4. So I created 4 new icons for the fake NAVAL units.

I did it very carefully, let the palette colors at the same place/slots. But unfortunaly I have lost the transparency as a result.
(unmodified airborne icons are ok in the picture)

I also tried to convert unmodified ground icons (fresh reverse-converted TGA images/icons - got them via reverse script) back to rcs/idx pair, but the result was opaque too. It means my new icons are probably innocent. There is probably something bad with "irc2res.pl" or "*.irc" file. (I guess the script is ok, I just do something wrong during the conversion I think)

What are those two numbers in the end of each row?
Why did my new icons lost transparency please?

I am starting to anticipate slowly, where the problem could be hidden.
There are various flags/fields, the IDX/RSC pair contains.
So I guess these values can be setted during the conversion (via irc file- I guess via these mystery numbers)

what I have extracted from this wiki:

UseColorKey = 0x40000000 The image uses the first color in the palette (or magenta, for non-paletted images) as the color key (transparency color) – any pixels using that color should be rendered as transparent
But as I said before - even decompile/compile process destroyed the transparency in my case...?

I think the error is in your irc file. Instead of [LOADIMAGE] it should read [LOADTRANSIMAGE].

I checked my irc2res.pl script, but there was no "LOADTRANSIMAGE" text string inside script. But I tried it anyway - the result were just 8 bit small useless files. So i searched for another perl script and have found "irc2res1.pl" file. This one contains "LOADTRANSIMAGE" string and can also read "LOADTRANSIMAGE" parameter irc file. The new icons are transparent now. :D
