Somin wrong here

Post by Vlamgat » 2002-07-23 12:52:00

I've installed (and uninstalled) ODS 6 times now and each time with the same result. Also, none of the other postings reflect the problem that I have, so here goes.

After selecting Desert Storm Theatre, I get to choose between three operations: the first one says Not in Use, the second Operation Desert Storm and third Black Phoenix.

Selecting Operation Desert Storm, only two airbases appear on the map, Incirlik and Batman (haha). The selection of Khalid International appears to be a default, but there only a number of AWACS sqns are listed.

Selecting Black Phoenix, no allied airbases appear, only two Iraqi airbases.

In Frugalsworld's Falcon4 forum, I saw screenshots of these same UI screens, showing a lot of allied (blue) airbases to choose from, which proves that somin's wrong with my ODS. Now, I can continue flying C-130H log supply flights out of Batman (haha), or even the odd F16 or F15 escorts from Incirlik, but I sure would like to grab a piece of the action near Kuwait.

Question is: how? Do I have to uninstall ODS and SP3 and then reinstall SP3/ODS? (this option I have so far avoided).

PS. I'm no puter wizard, just fly Falcon4, so please be very clear if I have to type/delete stuff in files etc.

Oh yes, one more thing: to everyone who contributed to ODS, thank you, your hard work is much appreciated.

Ok this is where the first sign of trouble is. You should only be seeing two (2) campaigns.

I cannot think of way how this would effect it. But hey, since you installed/uninstalled ODS already six times, maybe you should give it a try.

Anyways you did not list your windows version, 98/me/win2k/xp?

Also can you take screenshot (jpg please) of the campaign selection screen and email it to me nospam
or for more contact info: http://www.pmctactical.org/contact.php

If we go to the tech talk here, first is that most likely the <falcondir>/artDesStorm is missing or the select.rsc/.idx with maybe some art1024/ files is broken/missing. Might be good to take a look what kind of stuff can be found in your falcon dir.

Thanks for the response.

I tried to make a screenshot but couldn't manage to convert the TGA to JPG. Did the whole uninstall/install jive again and was extremely disappointed when I saw the same problem in ODS. Totally in the dark.

System: AMD Duron 750 MHz, 256 MB RAM, DirectX 8.1, Win 98SE, 3D Blaster Banshee 16 MB. Falcon is installed in Drive :D (partition 1.9 Gig).

I took a screenshot of the contents of Falcon4\artdesstorm\art\resource and e-mailed it, please have a look if there's anything wrong there.

Vlammie

PS. I downloaded a new copy of ODS which I used for the latest install jive, so its not a DL error.

Got it Snakeman!!!

Uninstalled the whole lot again, then ran Scandisk and found lost file fragments on the F4 installation drive. Had these removed, did the install jive and ....

Got ODS in perfect condition :) :D

Thanks again

I'm kinda guessing here, but I'd try it without the old logbook. I know that Aeyes has said that using an old "F-16" logbook with one of his pits can cause problems, so perhaps the same thing is happening with you.

I've started creating an entirely new logbook for each theater - and I might make a different one for each plane in each theater! Can someone say "Logbook manager"?! :D :D

Thanks T_Rex

Installed ODS without the logbook and cockpits and its fine again.

How to separate the two theaters so I can still use my old logbook and other cockpits in Korea is my next question.

Well, what I do is when I first install up to SP3, I start my standard "T Rex" logbook. Then I install ODS, go to ODS and start a new logbook "ODS Rex." Whenever I switch back to Korea, I just make sure that the logbook I'm using is T Rex. While I haven't done it yet, I'll probably make a new logbook "ODS Hog" for the A-10 and probably "ODS Hornet" for the F/A-18. I understand some people really like the idea of having one logbook, so you have to balance that. I've never cared how many logbooks I've gone through, so I pretty much start a new one with each install.

I think if you use your old logbook only with the F-16 in Korea, I think you'll be alright, but I'm not sure. Just to be safe, you may want to start new pilots for the new planes in Korea, too.

If you want more specifics, just let me know.

Howzit again

The problem has reappeared, this time without my logbook or any cockpits...

I managed to save a new operation under Black Phoenix, and that operation works fine but the UI screen again shows the Korean campaign background (Viper high up against the sun) instead of the Viper low above the dunes firing a missile. Also, the campaign map shows only 2 Iraqi (red) airbases.

So its not the logbook that's the cause of the problem. Maybe Win98SE unable to support the growing complexities of the game?

T_Rex//

Yes, SP3 started, I selected ODS and the correct UI screen (2 campaigns) appeared, I selected K Khaled airbase in Desert Storm and saved the operation (Alpha), exited to main ODS UI. In BP I selected Doha airbase and saved the operation (Bravo). Then exited to ODS and exited SP3. When I started SP3 later, it opened with the Korea UI background. (Blue sky, sun and Viper at altitude).

Selected ODS and it reopened with the same image, When I clicked Campaign, the three campaign buttons appeared again with the wrong campaign map. I clicked Saved and opened Operation Bravo. Got in the F-16 and bombed the hell out of some airfield on Karg island. So the saved operation worked fine, but of course, once an airbase has been selected, I can't select another in the BP UI screen, cos that now only shows 2 Iraqi (red) airbases.

Re Uninstall/Install procedure

1. Uninstall using Settings, Control Panel, Remove Programs
2. Delete Microprose folder in D drive
3. Remove F4Patch in registry.
4. Clear Win\Temp
5. Reboot
6. Do the Falcon jive: install from CD, delete msvcrt.dll, reboot, apply 108US, delete msvcrt, copy tacrdata.zip to F4 directory, reboot, unzip SP3 to F4 directory and run. (almost all the time SP3 freezes the installation at 7% of Apply Patch, reboot and resumes with no further freeze)
7. Install ODS (I notice this version's installation differs from the previous, where I had to point it to the location of F4Patch. This version indicates D:\Microprose\Falcon4 as the directory where ODS will be installed.

I looked in Registry for any entries that looked like they might be ODS related but couldn't find any (previous versions left TerrainGroup entry in my registry, but this one not). If there are any files, please give me their names.

I've also got the same problem with ODS.
Here is a sample screen of the campaign page Image

System specs are as follows
Windows XP, P4 1.3, 256ram, Nvida 32 Gforce2

I tried full set of install F4, SP3 & ODS....No joy. I've also tried disabling a few F4 patch settings...again no joy

Any help would be appreciated.

hmm seesm you got 800 UI set
please set it to 1024
in falconsp.cfg
or configeditor

ODS does not support 800 UI's up till now
128 theaters are bigger.. and so are the maps now it would be very hard to fit all in

Yes, the solution is simple: open SP3 Config Editor, Settings Hardware and enable HiResUI 1024X768.

Yea..

Okay thanks all of you for this report.

I have updated the Desert Storm web page to reflect that users need to use 1024x768 screen resolution with ODS.

Thanks.
