TCN problems - need to know why :)

Post by Red Dog » 2002-09-12 15:40:00

I noticed some time ago that with the latest beta (v.03) and the new stations.dat there are some Tacans that are not working.

Even when selected in the Ded or with the backup switch and even when the Tacan is in range, i can't get any reading from the HSI. It's like the TCN is US.

And yes, The HSI is in TCN mode, Yes the stations.dat is correctly placed and yes, I'm in X band :)

Others from the ODS TACAN volonteer group (OTVG) have confirmed the very same problem in Egypt and Syria.

Any F4 guru know what could cause a TCN to not work as advertised ??

Relative to that post and some other reports from the guys helping me on the ODS tacan listing, We noticed that Tacan seem to work on and off. http://www.pmctactical.org/f4/cgi-bin/u ... 3&t=000022

Any chance that is caused by the theater switching???

Widmak?

Is it actually possible to change the TCN numbers upon each airbase?

what do you mean??
Changing the tcn channel of an airbase, yes by editing the stations.dat file.

What's your idea?

Well, then the information is already available.
Dudi, check the airbase list. You'll find all you need for israel. But I suppose you know more than the list as far as Israel is concerned :)

The spreadsheet can be found here: http://www.candyparty.com/ST/SP/airbase_list.zip

Does that happen with all airbases, or only with specific tacan numbers ?

Which airbases are affected ?

Hi,

I can verify that all three TACANS in Syria do not work (Aleppo Intl, Damascus Intl, Latakia). In fact, that is not strictly true, after reinstalling F4, SP3, and ODS, Damascus (107X) worked in DED mode but not in Backup mode during one short flight. Since that one occasion, it has not worked again (very many attempts).

I just did two diverts in Balkan with TACAN only in a MP flight.

Flying out of Pula we noticed on takeoff, that the runway was cratered (we had to use one side of the airbase to takeoff). on the home trip i was a bit stretched on fuel, so we diverted to Rijeka on TACAN 120X. That worked fine on my end (the host) but not on the clients TACAN. Then when we reached Rejika, the friggin runway was cratered there to and Rejika told us to divert some 500nm off. Well with 900 lbs i could not go 500nm, so we chose the nearest RWY in straight line north Ljubljana TACAN 074X. This worked fine for me too, but the client was still not able to make it work.

btw i landed with 100 lbs in spare. LONG LIVE "HOME" cruise mode!!!

I might have a beginning of explanation.
in ODS for instance, Madinah airbase is tcn 088X with ILS 111.7
Still, on the DED, when 088x is selected, it shows 114.1 as the ILS freqency.

I looked at other theater searching for an airbase with TCN 088X having an ILS of 114.1 and guess what - the one I found is also in ODS and is OVDA in Israel : 088X ILS 114.1.

It might be interesting to know if OVDA tacan worked ok? GHARPER, can you tell me if you already had problems with Ovda TCN?

So the bottom line is that I think TCN problems might comes from double TCN entries in the stations.dat.

I'll continue my investigation and if need be I'll make a new stations.dat file for ODS.

just sent in the report

yes OVDA is the ONE working TACAN in Israel, and all the other Israeli TACANs are doubled with other stations as well, and they work perfectly, for THOSE OTHER stations.

As far as Israel is concerned, this is not a theater conflict problem with Balkans. if there is a theater switching problem then it is with the original Korea theater.

When I started on Israel, I had Balkans, ODS, and the Dogfight hi-res and Korea 2005 installed. After I discovered the TACAN problem, I wiped Falcon and did a clean reinstall with just 1.08, SP3, and ODS (with the appropriate station.dat and kneemap files), and the problem remained.

Hope that helps

Okay, Now it's clear that the problems come from multiple tacan channels.
What's weird is that it worked well for the 1st version of the Balkans prior to SP3.

A new stations.dat was done and sent to some tester as well as a new kneemap, so hopefully, the problem is about to be solved.

Next is Balkan.

Had problems with all tacan channels using Aeyes superpit. I found that the AA/TR and T/R is reversed. All ground tacan stations worked ok when air to air transmit/receive was selected....maybe this may help but I'm not sure if this is only a problem with the superpit or is common to others in SP3. :?
