Volonteers for ODS Tacan listing

Post by Red Dog » 2002-09-09 19:43:00

Here is how to proceed to give a hand in the ODS TCN listing.
We want to provide a complete list of all relevant navigation data for all airstrips and airbase in ODS.

For that we need:
- Name of airbase
- Tcn Channel and band
- Tcn Range
- RNW orientations
- Checking tiles
- F4 Runway elevation
- Runway Lat/Long coordinates

What you need:
- Latest ODS version installed
- Latest Stations.dat http://www.candyparty.com/ST/SP/ODS/sta ... 270802.zip
Rename to stations.dat and copy in the Campaign\DesStrom folder
- Latest kneemap with Rings http://www.candyparty.com/ST/SP/ODS/kne ... _range.gif
Right click and save on your HD. Rename kneemap.gif and copy the file in your Campaign\DesStrom folder

A good habit is to make changes to F4 files ONLY when KOREA is selected. Copy the files, and only then switch to ODS :)

How to proceed:
- Lat and Long data.
To have them is pretty simple. Make a TE starting from one base and makes the flight plan go precisely over each airbase/airstrip in the country. Then once in the cockpit browse through all the steerpoints and write down the DED lat and long data. Don't forget the name of the airbase.
Make sure you zoom in precisely over each airbase to ensure that the waypoint is right over the base.

- F4 elev data
This one is funny - but could certainly be given by terrainview. Still I like to do it.
From the same Te you previously created, fly to each airbase.
Try to align the runway
Select barometric altitude to be displayed in the hud
When passing over the runway - write down the radar altimeter altitude and substract its value from the altimeter in the HUD
You have the field elevation
You can also dismiss the radar alt but then you may scratch the belly of the F16 :D

- Radials and DME.
For the airfield/airstrips having no Tacan collocated, I need to have one reference point. That means having a radial from another Tacan station and a DME for the distance. That way, I have one direction and a distance, quite enough for positionning.

When over the runway (not too low this time) pick a powerfull station around. Center the CDI on the HSI in FROM and write down the radial value. (I think F4 works better with FROM values) Write also the DME value from the HSI.

Sometime, An airbase or airstrip is not in range of any TCN station. In that case, we have two possibilities:
- Range and bearing from bullseye
- Use the HSI in NAV mode and select an airbase around preferably equipped with a powerfull TCN station (even not in range)
Center the CDI in FROM and write down the radial and DME.
Even if the Tacan is out of range this way can help reaching that particular spot

Still in, All right - UPDATED - 09-16-02 19:16GMT

Ideally we want to assign one country to one volonteer.
I'll provide to each volonteer a blank template to fill up.

T-Rex started working on the NW corner and I started on the SE corner.
On my side, Saudi arabia, Kuwait and Southern Irak is done.
T-Rex, maybe you can post what you already covered.

The country that needs to be covered are:

Saudi Arabia (complete)
Iran => SWAMPY (airbase)
Irak => FB (airbases) FREMMED (airstrips)
Kuwait (complete)
Egypt => ALICATT
Israel => GHARPER1
Jordan => FALCON1
Lebanon => KRAIG MITCHELL
Syria => DRYLOUVRE
Cyprus => KRAIG MITCHELL
Turkey => (in progress - TRex)
Azerbaidjan (complete)
Armenia (complete)
Turkmenistan (complete)
Barhain (complete)
UAE (complete)
Qatar (complete)

Post your choices :)

Here is a sample of a country list that needs to be filled.
http://www.candyparty.com/ST/SP/ODS/TCN_ODS_Iran.zip

And here is a link to an almost completed sheet so that you can see the required format: http://www.candyparty.com/ST/SP/ODS/TCN ... pleted.zip

I've done Turkmenstan - all 3 bases. :)

First, when building the TE, I take off from one base and make sure there are 2-4 other "primary" bases that I want the info for. Then, I place steerpoints over 2 "secondary" airbases. I do this if there are no TACAN airbases in range of those I'm flying to. Also, make sure you've either checked unlimited fuel or added enough fuel tanks.

So, I start the TE. While sitting on the runway (ignoring the ATC) I write down the long/lat of the first airbase. I hit ctrl-z [release] l [lower case L] to get the F4 coordinates. The "Z" axis number (without the minus) is the actualy altitude. Then, if in TACAN range, I get the bearings to the other tacan stations. If no TACANs are in range, I make the secondary waypoints current, then get radial and distance to them.

Then I take off, fly to the next airbase, land (hopefully) and get the info again.

Good idea to post all this stuff here, RD! :)

No Problem, I propose you get in touch with TRex and arrange something with him. I know he started on the east side. Maybe you can make the west part and coordinate with him.

just checking in. got Israel done. hope to get a chance to type it up and send it in sometime today or tomorrow (having HDD issues).

also FYI, 4 of the 5 Tacans in Israel don't work right. It'll be in the report. I'm assuming its a similar thing referenced in the other Tacan related post.
