I think it's really great when a combat veteran writes a book. To my knowledge we only have two air combat books written by F-105 pilots: Thud Ridge and Gene's Pak Six. A book written by someone that achieved the "100 mission patch" in the F-105, means this book will be have high value for aviation aficionados.

Actually, Broughton wrote TWO F-105 books. The second in the late 1980's was a tell-all called: "Going Downtown- The war against Hanoi & Washington" It really expands on incidents in "Thud Ridge" and names names and a**holes. He even goes into detail into his courtmartial (following the Turkistan incident)- who when and why.

Some more 105 books:
Joe Haywood, TAXI DANCER
Marshall Harrison, CADALLAC FLIGHT
Tom (Bear) Wilson, TERMITE HILL, LUCKY'S BRIDGE and TANGO UNIFORM.
Ken Bell, 100 MISSIONS NORTH

Heywood and Bell were drivers, Wilson was backseater and Harrison was a Sidewinder/Pretzel FAC

No, I hadn't heard that. The few guys I've spoken or corresponded with, who've flown the Thud, loved it.

Even the F-16 was known as the lawn dart when it first flew.
The F-105 was very rugged. If you pick up Colonel Broughton's other book "Going Downtown," he has pics of huge holes from 57mm and 37mm rounds and the wounded bird made it back. Those guys had some brass ones to fly through the fire storms of flak that North Vietnam's "chained" gunner's put up.
