ATC for Vietnam Airbases
The F4 Voice Group is producing new ATC voices for the various theaters, including Vietnam.
Our actors would appreciate some help with the pronounciation of the airbase names. It would be most helpful if someone could record the names clearly and send the file to me at r_w_crawford@yahoo.com .
The list of airbase names follows. Please let me know if there are any changes.
Thank you.

Colin, I would wait before spending some time on Vietnam. At least until the definitive airbase list is available

No, I'm Bob and he's Colin!
Re: ATC for Vietnam Airbases
RD - let me know when a definitive list is available and I will alter the voice actors script accordingly.
(we'll still need a pronounciation guide)

Snowman very few on the list qaulify as "airbases".quote:Originally posted by Snowman:

Chu Lai
Da Nang
Diem Bien Phu was an airstrip where the French got their butts kicked in 1954, never an airbase
Nakhon Phanom - NKP
Nam Phong (Rose Garden) only used during LB II
Phu Cat
Tan Son Nhut
Tuy Hoa
Udorn
Ubon
Korat
Phu Bai had a lot of Army fixed wing and choppers, no Air Force there.
Ban Me Thuot (2 OTT)would only have ATC transmissions with choppers, 0-2s and 0-1s, along with those a/c the guys from Pyramid talked to.
Kon Kaen might have a U-10 or CH-3 nosing around but most of the radio traffic would be the Army ammo convoys between Udorn and NKP.
You have locations from SVN, NVN,Thailand, Laos and Cambod listed here. Many on the list were uncontrolled "airfields" (at best). Duc Co, Duc Lap, Bu Prang and Dak Seang, etc were nothing more than SF Camps with red strips of laterite inside or outside the wire.
A list such as yours is invaluable, but is going to need some tweaking if it is not to be overly confusing to someone not familiar with the geographical sub domains of SEA.
If you are working on a list of locations that would actually talk to an F-4 driver, that could be put together in pretty short order.

Chance, I'll need your knowledge for sure!
Vietnam will be a dream with so few airbases compared to ODS I'll make a "pre" list for VietNam as soon as the TCN list for ODS and Korea are done.
I hope I can work on it with Chance - or it will be me working with Chance .
Anyway, I'll forward it to you.

Here is your basic, off the top of the head, SEA Principal Airbaselist. Keep in mind these bases are the Biggies, and with the noted exceptions are then only ones jet aircraft operated from. All of these bases were in either SVN or Thailand. For political reasons Thailand based a/c were, except in extreme situations such as Khe Sanh and TET '68, restricted from operating in SVN. Their primary job was kicking the poop out of the north. After peckerhead johnson stopped the bombing of the north in Nov 68, HCTrail interdiction in Loas became the primary mission of the Thailand base a/c.
Principal Airbases in SEA along with some of what flew from each. Remeber, nothing is accurate without dates/time frames.
Thailand:
U-Tapao - BUFFs, tankers, U-2s, SR-71s, DC-130s, etc
Don Muang (BKK)- F-100s, F-101s, C-130s in the early days. TAC Airlift for most of the festivities
Takhli - F-105s
Korat - F-105s
Ubon - F-4s (the mighty Wolfpack)
Udorn - F-4s
Nakhon Phanom (NKP) - No jets. A-1s, T-28s, A-26s, HH-3s, HH-53s, CH-3 and CH-53s. 0-1s, 0-2s, OV-10s, C-123s, U-10s and C/AC/EC-47s and a whole bunch more.
Nam Phong - Marine F-4s and others during Linebacker II
SVN
Tan Son Nhut - RF-101s, RF-4s
Bien Hoa - F-100s, A-37s
Phan Rang - F-100s, later F-4s I think
Cam Ranh Bay F-4s and major TAC Airlift center
Nha Trang - No jets, Major Air Command Operations Center and TAC Airlift
Tuy Hoa - F-100s
Phu Cat - F-100s, F-4s
Pleiku - No jets, Another Air Commando hangout
Chu Lai - Jarheads, F-4, A-4, F-8, and whaever Marines fly.
Da Nang - F-4s
From the Delta (Binh Thuy) to the DMZ (Dong Ha) there were airstrips, airfields and wide spots in the road (Song Be City) where a/c operated from. Airstrips appeared and disappeared with the Special Forces camps they supported. Lima Sites in Laos were overrun then retaken and reopened with the changing of the seasons.
The "big" bases were there from beginning (or at least from the time they were built) to end. Everything else depended on the date. There were a lot of Bases/Camps that were very important Air Operations Centers but did not support jet aircraft. Phu Bai, Tay Ninh, Binh Thuy, Phuoc Vinh in SVN, Long Tieng, Savanakhet, Pakse, Louang Phrabang and Vientiane in Loas.
This is what I meant about focus and tweaking. The whole thing can get confusing when taken as a whole (440+ Lima Sites alone), but becomes much more manageable when compartmentalized as with the Jet Bases.
