navaids info for VietNam

Post by Red Dog » 2001-11-14 09:42:00

Has anyone some navaids channels information and airbase information for the VietNam terrain?
It seems there are really few radionavigation systems in country.

Has anyone an idea how to implement portable Tacan unit in the campaign as it was used during the conflict?

I only know of a few of the actual channels for some of the tacan in Vietnam during that time, but I have a fairly decent map of northern South Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, and North Vietnam. Basically, what's north of the 17th parallel. Here's a few locations of Tacans and Non-directional Beacons (NDB):
Da Nang Tacan & NDB
Hue tacan & NDB
just north of Hue on the coast is a NDB at Tan My
Camp Evans NDB (on the main highway, about half way between Hue and Quang Tri
Quang Tri Tacan & NDB
I got a friggin map crease obscuring the name, but There was a TACAN & NDB called HAM NGH right near or at Khe Sahn

North of the 17th Parallel, in Thailand,
Nakhon Phanom West, (the airbase) has VOR-TACAN-NDB
Nakhon Phanom (town) has a NDB west of the townsite
The airstrip at SAKON NAKHON has a NDB
UDORN has a TACAN & NDB

In Laos,
Vientiane has a NDB
Roughly 65 miles north of Vientiane, in the mountains is a NDB apparently called SKYTREE or SKYLINE at roughtly 19degrees, 10 minutes North & 102degrees, 55minutes East. No town or village shown.

Also, you'd expect a TACAN and NDB at any of the airbases on the attached map. (sorry, but it's about 500kb)

Thanks Hamm,

It helps to have the map.
So far I only have VorDme on Noi Bai, Da Nang, Phu Cat, Pleiku, Tan Shon Nut, Quang Tri, Korhat, Nakhon Phanom, Ubon, Udon.

With the ones you provided the lists get longer and that is good. By chance would you have any channels for those?

I know a lot of TCN station used during the conflict were portable units, so the problem is quite dynamic. I even remember reading some battle for some Hills were a portable TCN was installed. (CIA installed some in LAOS too). It would also be helpfull to have some of these channels.

Thanks for your help,

hmmmm. Not sure how I got #1...
As I said, I only have a few tacan channels for Phu Cat and Cam Ranh Bay areas. Look at the Cam ranh bay image; the radio freq for approach appears to be 112.4, and the tacan channel is 71.
Phu cat appears to be channel 87

If you are still up this freq, go to www.members.tripod.com/chancefac/TACANs.htm TACAN Channels, T/V/C#s, Locations and comments, some tower freqs, etc. I have more detailed info such as co-ords, etc if you need them. Contact me direct at larryh@w-link.net
