Nightlighting in OF

Post by Expo » 2007-07-04 01:55:54

Does anyone know what changed in OF regarding nightlighting?

I followed the tutorials to paint nightlights on textures but at night they don't light up.

I used the first 4 boxes on the palette. Basicly creation was on .pcx format so perhaps it is when they are autoconverted to .dds?

Hmm good question, I think that if you have the city tiles palette properly setup in PCX files (SPx/AF), they should go okay through seasonswitcher into RV/OF.

You refer to city tiles, does that mean that only city tiles have nightlighting capability?

No. Usually and 99.9% of the case its only the city tiles that has lights. At least I dont recall any theater with night lighting in other tiles except cities, there was some mentioning it before that you could dot highway streetlights also, but never seen this done in any theater.

When you say you used the first four boxes, do you mean indexes 0 thru 3? cos the nightlighting always used to use the last four, indexes 252 thru 255.

That said, wether the night-lighting is still available in OF I don't know. ;)

i have been using 0-3 because it mentioned in a tutorial that falcon is reading them in reversed order so 0-3 becomes 252-255. But please correct me if i misunderstand this.

thnx guys!

http://www.pmctactical.org/f4/docs/zaggy_tile_tut.php

"How to convert the RGB images back to PCX

...Unfortunately the positions for the nightlighting are switched in Photoshop so you have to switch the positions by hand. Therefor click on the first color at the top left of the color table and hit CTRL-C to copy the already marked hex value for the color to the clipboard. Then click on one of the 4 spots you left blank as you saved only 252 colors. When the color dialog opens hit CTRL-V to paste the color value from the clipboard to change the color. Repeat this for the next 3 colors from the beginning, too. ..."

Now i read it again it looks like it's photoshop not falcon that reverses the order so it it's possible that my version of PS does not do the same thing will give it a try.

However I must remind you that when testing i had no lighting at all so even if they were switched i should have seen lights anyway i believe.

Thanks I'll look into this and correction (if necessary) is on the way. In the mean time you can just rely on the working main texture/tile tutorial.
