lcktxtrc.irc versus theater.irc

Post by Snake Man » 2007-03-25 03:44:24

Art/main/ directory files lcktxtrc.irc versus theater.irc

It seems that RV uses lcktxtrc.irc file and F4AF uses theater.irc file. Can anyone else confirm this and perhaps shed some light on the matter why its been changed etc?

If this is the case, then we just need another option for the theater installer to rename the lcktxtrc into theater if installing into AF.

Not to mention that when I was testing, RV always crashed on this example file:

Code: Select all

[ADDTEXT] TXT_DPRK "Iran"
[ADDTEXT] TXT_SCENARIO_1 "PERSIAN LIGHTNING"
[ADDTEXT] TXT_SCENARIO_2 "BROTHERS-AT-ARMS"
[ADDTEXT] TXT_SCENARIO_3 "HAMMERFALL"
[ADDTEXT] TXT_ROLLING_FIRE "OPERATION: PERSIAN LIGHTNING"
[ADDTEXT] TXT_IRON_FORTRESS "OPERATION: BROTHERS-AT-ARMS"
[ADDTEXT] TXT_TIGER_SPIRIT "OPERATION: HAMMERFALL"
[ADDTEXT] TXT_SC_3 "The US, Britain and Israel have been attacked by Iranian sponsored terrorists. The 'Hammer' will now fall on Tehran and its leaders."
[ADDTEXT] TXT_SC_2 "Iran versus Iraq: The eight year war."
[ADDTEXT] TXT_SC_1 "Irans leadership wants to expand. Iraq is a tempting target. Coalition forces must blunt and defeat an attack aimed at taking control of Iraq and it's oil fields."
[ADDTEXT] TXT_TRUCE_EVEN "Iranian negotiators are offering to accept a restoration of the original status quo in exchange for an immediate cease fire."
[ADDTEXT] TXT_TRUCE_FAVORABLE "A favorable cease fire has been negotiated. In exchange, Iran has agreed to destroy its weapons of mass destruction and to abide by the results of a UN supervised dearmament."
[ADDTEXT] TXT_TRUCE_UNFAVORABLE "The Coalition Forces Command considers it expedient in the light of current force ratios to broker a negotiated settlement."
Doesn't RV support those addtext thingys and incomplete .irc file or whats going on here?

I looked at my RV installation and you are correct. RV has no theater.irc file. I don't know why....perhaps T_Rex or Ripsaw can shed some light on this fact?

However, I did notice that in AF the file UItxtstrings.irc is equivalent to lcktxtrc.irc in the old Falcon 4 (although there are additions in the AF Utxtstrings.irc that are not in the lcktxtrc.irc file).

The file theater.irc is the same across AF and the old Falcon 4 SP series but as mentioned previously, RV doesn't have this file.

So in a nutshell, what do we do?

Wait for feedback from RedViper guys for starters and then go from there?

Couby (or other OF guys) can you please check your directorys that what kind of files are located in OF install? (I have it installed too but I'm no expert on it as the bitch wont run on my compter, snif).

OF art/main files

Post by Epic » 2007-03-31 05:17:00

Snakeman

OF has the following of the a/m files in the art/main directory.

1. theater.irc - Training mission strings and campaign name strings.
2. lcktxtrc.irc - Everything else.

Hope this helps,

I've thought more about this, and a couple things might be going on. :)

My first thought was that the window, as defined in the scf, might not be large enough to accommodate the longer/extra text.

My second thought was that maybe you might have deleted a reference to a text string that was still being referenced - you basically had an scf referencing a text string that wasn't there.

I would try just changing one text string at a time and see if it works. :) I know I played with that file in RV and it worked.

Ok, from Scoob:
theater.irc entries over-ride lcktxtrc.irc entries.

The idea was that as new exe features, ui features, aircraft, etc. were implemented, the lcktxtrc.irc file is a continually moving target, necessitating theater's to continually update their own lcktxtrc.irc file to incorporate changes to the one in the master file.

In alternate theater, you might want different textual strings for things like "campaign names", "campaign events" and such.

Rather than having to update the entire file for each theater, a smarter move was to create the theater.irc concept that a much smaller "static" sub-set of text strings are needed for the theater, and as such, all entries in the theater.irc file over-ride entries in the lcktxtrc.irc file.

IIRC, the theater.irc concept was introduced in some time between SP1 and SP3. Any exe built from that code will probably also support the theater.irc string file, including red viper.
That could help muchly!

Okay in my RV dir of Theaters\Afghanistan\art\art\main there is theater.irc file, it contains this text:

Code: Select all

[ADDTEXT] TXT_CHINA "China"
[ADDTEXT] TXT_CIS "CIS"
[ADDTEXT] TXT_RUSSIA "CIS"
[ADDTEXT] TXT_DPRK "Afghanistan"
[ADDTEXT] TXT_PRC "PRC"
[ADDTEXT] TXT_ROK "Coalition"
[ADDTEXT] TXT_USA "USA"
[ADDTEXT] TXT_JAPAN "Pakistan"
[ADDTEXT] TXT_KOREA "Korea"
[ADDTEXT] TXT_COMBINEDFORCES "Combined Forces"
[ADDTEXT] TXT_NEUTRAL "Iran"
[ADDTEXT] TXT_SCENARIO_1 "Enduring Freedom"
[ADDTEXT] TXT_SCENARIO_2 "Fictional Iran"
[ADDTEXT] TXT_SCENARIO_3 "Strikes"
[ADDTEXT] TXT_ROLLING_FIRE "Enduring Freedom"
[ADDTEXT] TXT_IRON_FORTRESS "Fictional Iran"
[ADDTEXT] TXT_TIGER_SPIRIT "Strikes"
[ADDTEXT] TXT_SC_3 "Strikes."
[ADDTEXT] TXT_SC_2 "Iran joins Taliban and they jointly attack Pakistan where US forces are stationed."
[ADDTEXT] TXT_SC_1 "Enduring Freedom, attack on Taliban strongholds."
[ADDTEXT] TXT_THEATERNAME ""
[ADDTEXT] TXT_THEATERINFO ""
However when I fire up the campaign I see the old korean campaign texts. Whats wrong?

Try putting it in a lcktxtirc for that theater.

I'm afraid certain coders may not have noticed the part about checking for a theater.irc.

Also, try deleting/renaming the korea one?

Yeh, baby! You'd be my hero T_Rex (but I won't have your baby ;) ) if you can get the ADD PACKAGE functionality added to RV.

Rehashing old 2007 topic. Same thing happens with FF 5.5.1 release exe.
  • If I put that "theater.irc" file in the dir, no effect, it is not read at all.
  • If I put the lcktxtrc.irc file in the dir with only the changed lines for my theater, FF exe crashes.
  • If I put copy of FF korea theaters lcktxtrc.irc file with my modifications, works OK.
Anyone else have ideas about this, it just doesn't work or?

1)Correct,it is not READIN
2)Prob'ly wrong Syntax or a bad carriage return. (You would need to PM me on that)
3)Copy and Paste is the way to go with some of these file's

Bassically

lcktxtrc.irc was split into 3 files.

Theater.irc wich contains all theater related TXT strings
Units.irc wich contains all units (aircraft) TXT strings (located in art/main)
and UIstrings.irc, the remainder of lcktxtrc.irc and these are the global UI strings non theater or units related.
I had that changed back then to make all easier regarding theaterswitching etc.
