I've made an island thats 256 x 256, I have done some considerable work is there any way I can make it 512 x 512?.

Yes.

Since you saved your wrp with WrpTool its already 4WVR format. Now make a new island, file -> new -> 512. Then just use the import feature to import your saved existing island in. Voila.

You need to fiddle with the X/Z coordinates to have your island imported to the right position.
