Its now added into the downloads page.
We must realize that this is much higher elevation terrain than what you got in real life. Meaning yeah... not so realistic.
Even though this is not Quake, it is not the real DEM data either.

indeed not realistic
Iceland got this resolution in a realistic
scale.
now mountains ain't higher
the map has been compressed
so all is steeper and the overall terrain smaller

Re: Hires Dogfight Terrain
hmm, this does have a more alpine look to it.
I don't know ho high the maintains in F4's originhal korea are, but they always seem very flat to me.
I've been to the european alps many times, and this looks just the same. I've mainly visited the Hautes Alpes district (mountains in the range of 2000-3000 meters. some peaks might be a bit higher) in france, because my parents have a chalet there, and we went to that place about 4x a year since I was about 13(i'm currently 20 years old) but also switzerland and Austria.
some of the pics on the FW thread look just as if you're halfway up a mountain. (at the top it does look a bit flatter, but still way more pronounced than in F4 @ 9000 feet which is about 3000 meters)
if you'd make it look like 80 to 85% of it's current height, it would look like the alps. (mainly the slope ange which is just a bit too steep now)
hmm, is moddeling difficult? maybe I can try a little test terrain in the alps, using just a CATE tiled terrain to see if it's any different from korea. in terms of looks. (i don't have sp3 installed yet because I'm training some newbies in rp5 before moving om to sp3 with all its realism. therefore I can't try the southern regions of the europe theatre yet)
anyways, thnx for making this. now I can do some fun DF!

Re: Hires Dogfight Terrain
Hey is this compression also used in other theaters? I mean aren't the standart tiles too big for decent alpine regions? Balkans did not really give me the alpine environment i was looking for

indeed the tiles are drawn from a 1000 meterquote:Originally posted by kinggeorge:

perspective
thats why it only a dgft theater for fun
Iceland uses this hires though
however not compressed it gives smooth mountaintops
I've been doing some flying in Balkans
lately, and I must say I was quite impressed
with the elevations, however 1000 meter tiles
remain less suitable for smooth mountainslopes.
Iceland needs therefore a whole new tilset
with 250 meter perspective in mind.
